#22 [a fork in the road]

  • Sidelines. A Season in Other Rooms by [info]eliade (Spike/Xander): And Xander still couldn't bring himself to move or touch anything. He'd never been sure if the proverbial glass was half-full or half-empty, but he knew when the glass was broken.

  • Unaccomodated Man by [info]kindkit (Giles/Oz): He knows, of course, that this is a double exaggeration. He'll still be human most of the time.

And he hasn't really been human since Oz bit him, twenty-two days ago.

  • Alternative Lifestyle by [info]acchapin (Ripper/ Buffy): Elsewhere.

  • You Pretty Things by [info]doyle_sb4 (Fred/Dawn): The line starts with her birth and trails into dashes two days ago, when they brought her back. She draws a little off-ramp for her five years in Pylea and marks with an X the moment when she died. Another X, smaller, a quarter-inch or so back from that. It’s not to scale, but it’ll do. She just needs a model.

  • The Inherent Ineluctability of One's Fate by [info]stoptocheer (Willow/Tara, Xander, Giles, Buffy, Dawn):
And screamed, and screamed, and screamed, until the world was gone.

  • Fairy Tales by [info]nikitangel (Wes/Faith): Wes says that it didn’t always go down that way.

  • Beats a Cruel December by Brighid (Spike/Dawn): "Who wants to play?" she asked softly, and their faces grew slick with fear. She was the Slayer.

And everyone knew the Slayer was a crazy-assed bitch.

  • Run and Catch by [info]cesario (Drusilla, Dawn): Someone is trading one world for another, and Drusilla stands in the eddies of reality, ears attuned to one voice, then the next, none of them being especially permanent.

  • Thaw by Dazzle (Angel/Buffy, Angel/Cordy): TWO DAYS AGO, IN ANOTHER UNIVERSE * I wouldn't usually warn but, this is a deeply unsympathetic Buffy portrayal

  • American Gothic by Polly Burns (Connor/Wes): Time is strange, it's elastic, it can make itself impossibly dense or spread like a silk scarf. Time can arch its back like a cat and seem twice its size.

    #33 [reap this dreadful consequence]

  • the minor fall by [info]darling_effect (Wes/Lilah): But you make a fatal error when you ask him, “What was it like —when she cut you?” For once your line of questioning isn’t in the service of the greater evil or the task at hand; it’s all about satisfying your own niggling, personal curiosity. Does it mean you care? God, no. But, for whatever reason, you overstep your boundaries. And once said, it can’t be unsaid.

  • No Oceans Left by [info]coffeeandink (Justine): He never once touches her, not the entire summer.

  • Valley of Ashes by [info]hannasus (Willow): No one thought about him on that first, horrible day. Nor on the second, or the third. In fact, it was a full week—seven numb, unrelenting days—before anyone thought of Angel at all.

  • Inversion by [info]redbrickrose (Angel/Buffy): He should live to mourn them now.

  • the end of all things by international princess (Buffy): Slayers aren't supposed to be this old.

  • Let Me Start to Fade Away by [info]seraphcelene (Buffy/Angel): Anne wonders if they can smell the power on her beneath the aroma of hamburger.

  • Glean by [info]mintwitch (Buffy, future Slayers): All those girls.

  • Theodicy by [info]hesychasm (Wesley): Wesley held out his own arms, the stumps bloody and dripping. "I can't," he said. "I've already tried."

  • The Last Virtue by [info]yahtzee63 (Gunn): But he has to. "If you ain't in love with somebody, then screw whoever the hell you want to. Ain't nobody's business but yours. But if you're in love with somebody -- then you owe that person something, don't you? Don't you owe 'em -- just the truth?" He doesn't know why Cordelia doesn't understand this. He doesn't know if Fred understands it.

  • Life in Shadow by [info]minnow1212 (Tara): Tara was a little nonplussed whenever Dawn, Buffy, or Willow told her about Willow's progress, expectation shining in their faces as if she would ooh and ah like a mother over a child's straight-A report card. 40 plus days without violating Tara's mind or summoning a demon--did Willow expect a gold star? But of course Tara wanted to know how Willow was doing, of course she did. She was glad Willow was doing well. And of course Willow was focusing much of her attention right now on her recovery, so it was a natural topic of conversation.

#13 [the little fandoms that could]

  • My Big Breakup by [info]iamsab (Scrubs): You never wake up saying, "today, my world will be rocked." Or, if you do, then you just skip in to work all juiced up with world-rocking anticipation and then slip on some floor wax and go skating down the hall on your chest while the janitor curses at you for streaking the linoleum. In other words, a day like any other.

  • So. Like. by [info]lalejandra (My So-Called Life): "So? Like -- like what already, Graff?" he said impatiently, and ignored the hurt look on her face. "Like, you've been talking to me for five minutes, and all you've been like is -- whatever."

  • Trousers by [info]kadrin (Blackadder): There were many sentences, phrases, clauses, and indeed words that Lord Edmund Blackadder had decided he did not want in any reflection of his life, and "Lord Edmund Blackadder was concerned about the state of his tights" was high up the list.

  • A Very Manny Christmas by [info]2am_optimism (Black Books): "I don't know, it was that horrible I don't remember. I've blotted it out of my mind from the horror - that's how hard my life was."

  • From Mathematics Further Off by [info]fox1013 (Madeleine LEngle novels): Charles Wallace, of course, has it the worst; Meg cannot find a single other girl to come over and play with her dollhouse, never mind someone who could understand why placing things into patterns and pairs is so interesting (even though it is, of course; when things are in sets then there are all sorts of things you can organize), and she realizes that she is sub-par compared to any of them.

  • flesh mechanic by -- kel. and lise. (popslash): Lance looks down, right beside him are the two folders that stay closed. One of them is blank; the other has a handwritten post-it labeled 'Chris'.

  • De Loquenta Carne by [info]glossing (Angel): Being a disquisition on, investigation of, and delightful mastication over the various miracles and changes wrought by JASMINE, as they were reported by Her most treacherous SCRIBE W.; including also tales of Her beloved Father, Connor; the great Unlocking; and ghosts, spectres, generals and lovers aplenty.

  • The Shore by [info]entrenous88 (Eve): He gestured at the horizon, at the blinding white sand, and the warm blue sky. “It’s just a modality, a place to put all of you while they train you and then weed you down to one.”

  • Something Else by [info]romanyg (Nina/Angel): “Oh,’ she said. Simply, “Oh.’ She was watercolor, matte paper, slowly seeping, brush lingering.

  • Aching to Be by [info]glossing (Nina/Dawn): Strange and gawky, hanging around the edges of rooms and looking at Nina sidewise like she knows something Nina doesn't. Like she wants to *tell* Nina something. She's not human; in a world of monsters, witches, and superheroes, Dawn is the strangest of them all, crafted-created-sculpted from traces of blood and lunar magics.

  • This Eternal Now by [info]butterfly (Eve): Eve hasn't been young since the beginning of mankind and she was never a girl. No, she was born a woman, straight from her lover's very bones.

  • Five Senses by [info]missambs (Gwen/Nina): There's another reason why she's staring at her. There is. Now if only Nina could think of it.

    #36[the bread and salt]

  • Dogma by [info]idyll (Angel/Faith): Different than it was with Buffy; a dark burn as opposed to a righteous ferocity. And it's not right to compare them, he knows how unfair it is to both, has seen the ugly things it brings out in each, but he can't help it.

  • Triple Point by [info]sweptawaybayou (Angel/Faith/Lindsey): Scratched and bruised, droplets of blood staining every mark where Angelus’ razor sharp teeth had nicked her neck and the baby soft skin of her inner thighs.

  • with the lights out it's less dangerous by [info]sophia_helix (Giles/Willow): Oh Giles, idol of her youth, always just a step away from too close. Always desired because of the thin curtain, the things he never let her see. Here, close, a man of flannel and stubble and morning breath and hair cut too short. A man who forgets to throw away old milk and watches Top of the Pops every week without fail. A man she could never touch, not really, not even if she crawled inside his skin.

  • Cotton Candy by [info]circe_tigana (Angel/Spike (/Buffy) ): Its like being drawn to a traffic accident, like the feeling in the pit of her stomach when Xander looks at her that way. Repelled, yet secretly, unwillingly, attracted.

  • Mirror by [info]marenfic (Nina/Buffy): “No marks,’ you remind her with a voice that is already husky with your want.

  • Viewpoint by [info]thamaris (Spike/Xander): And, he observes with admirably clinical detachment, he might want this. Because Spike is strong, pretty and blond, like Buffy, which has always pushed some funky-monkey buttons for Xander, but also because Spike never gets tired, never gives up, never stops fighting.

  • Mystery Play by [info]glossing (Buffy/Angel): It was the rule before Buffy knew the game existed. Angel had known, Angel had always known. From Hemery through the first months in Sunnydale, he looked at her. Never touched.

  • A Peculiar Comfort by [info]neverneverfic (Buffy/Angel): But no scars was their only rule.

  • Come Alive by [info]nautibitz (Buffy/Spike): He is stunned, but he's not stupid. He kisses her back.

  • Night Watch by [info]thete1 [info]debchan & [info]spike21 (Spike/Xander): And suddenly Xander wants to see.

    #27 [on the road]

  • Slow Like Honey by [info]idyll (Oz/Lindsey): They drive in silence for the most part, and that's the way they both like it. Thick and quiet, with words unspoken getting pulled out through the open windows of Lindsey's truck. Lindsey's had a dozen years or so of words, made a lot of money with how good he was with them, got a lot of really bad people off the hook with them. So silence is welcome, just like everything that's different is.

  • The Curve Of Your Lips Rewrite History by [info]katemonkey (Oz/Xander): I woke up alone, in a fleabag truck stop motel in Needles. The air conditioner growled in the window, turned up to full blast and only making
the room a few degrees cooler than outside.

  • Find the River by [info]seanarenay (Oz/Wes): Chicago. He could work a pretzel stand. Des Moines. He could be a fry cook. Denver. He could operate a ski lift. Vegas. He could be a blackjack dealer. Or a prostitute. Well, okay, that wasn't too likely. But options were good.

  • You Will Drive With Your Evil Hand by [info]gatefiction (Lindsey): You'll drive to Vegas, to try and find yourself by way of excessive gambling.
You'll have a hard time playing Black Jack, you'll fail at "24", and you'll end up with a lot of small change, playing the one-armed bandits and you'll pretend to have fun, for a while.

  • Remembering Amnesia by [info]coffeeandink (Wes/Lilah): He left the last place in the world he wants to be yesterday evening, and at some point he's going to have to (face her again) go back. When he thinks about it, it gets hard to breathe. He stops thinking about it.

    #28 [seasons]

  • Buffy Season Noir by [info]eliade (16/22): Buffy tried not to look like she was limping as she walked up alongside the boundary wall of the cemetery. Limping did not say: Victorious Slayer on a Rampage--Fear My Kicky Boots! No. Limping said ouch in a small voice, and asked you to wait a moment while the limper rested.

  • as long as trees are skying by [info]marginalia (anne of green gables, firefly, harry potter, and btvs/ats): There are questions of who and where and how, and it's a surprise when she settles on: "Why you?"

  • The Book of Daniel by [info]glossing (Giles/Oz): And *now* goes on for a good long time. Lasts longer than Oz ever thought it could.

The dark seeps around them. Couple of locusts trill. A frog hoots and burps in the weeds. Chilly, getting chillier, as they walk back to the parking lot, their fingers, hands, arms entwined.

  • The Summer Sun and That Boy’s Look by [info]entrenous88 (Oz/Xander): All of a sudden it occurs to him -- summer. It’s a month away, but the quality of light as it moves through the air and the sharpness of the glare off the cars and the asphalt . . . Only in summer does he see sun like that. He closes his eyes for one beat, two.

  • Angel Season Six: No Limits by [info]ats_nolimits (22/22)*: three pairs of eyes were on him, two set in blue. Connor noticed out of his peripheral vision that Illyria didn't bother moving towards him. Maybe to make up for her disinterest, Angel was giving Connor what could only be described as a full visual medical examination.

Angel's eyes stopped at the logo on Connor's t-shirt even though the word printed there was only partially visible between his unbuttoned oxford. He wrinkled his nose as if he smelled a profanity.

*I've not finished it.

    #10 [friends forever]

  • Four Ghosts by [info]holli (Giles, Buffy, Willow, Xander): By the end of your sophomore year of high school, you're pretty sure that Sunnydale High is haunted.

  • Winners by Ins (Buffy, Willow, Xander, Tara): I meet up with Xander and give my count -- seven, now just
about dawn and time to pack it in -- and he grins, "lucky number,"
and it's been a good night. I'm glad to see him smiling.

  • The Gang of Four by Jim Loats (Willow, Cordy, Xander, Jesse): It's getting harder to remember every day, so I'm going to try to write it all down before it's gone.

  • Not Quite The Loneliest Number" by [info]stoptocheer (Xander/Willow): And hey, who could forget the grand number seventy-eight. Seventy-eight days since Jesse's body had started moving again.

  • bleeding by [info]lalejandra (Willow/Xander): She's lost everything.

She has Kennedy -- who doesn't count.

    #17 [sing it]

  • Seven Languages by [info]yin_again (Spike/Xander): The fourth time was in the closet, but neither one laughed at the joke. Spike wasn’t even sure if Xander was real at first. When he decided that he was real, Spike prayed for the first time in a hundred years, thanking whoever was listening for letting him feel warmth and want and kindness again.

  • Lessons in Cool: That Music Thing by [info]dessert_first and [info]tesla321 (Xander/Oz): So now Xander is sitting on his front steps, guitar in hand, waiting for Oz to pick him up and teach him a few other things about guitars. Like maybe how to play one.

  • Kyrie Eleison by [info]kyrafic (Angel): It's been centuries since he rose before dawn to walk to Mass, blowing plumes of white breath ahead of him into the cold darkness. He can barely recall the feel of the wafer on his tongue and the details of the priest's robes grow hazy in his mind.

  • Ballad of Ira Hayes by [info]julia_here (Xander): Everyone else was in Europe; but Europe was just another nowhere to him; his friends were no longer his definition of home, and after a few years in the great strangeness below the Sahara he’d ceased to value novelty. His home town was at the bottom of a crater, but there was a whole country full of Toys R Us and Starbucks and multiplexes, McDonald’s and Wal-mart, and that stuff was as close to home as he was ever going to get.

  • Shelter by [info]mosca (Wes/Angel): All Wesley could think at this point was, "Please don't say 'White heat,'" because then he was going to have to say "Velvet Underground" back, and all semblance of seriousness would be lost. And he wanted to be sympathetic. He was starting to care about Angel's morose bullshit for the first time in a long time, and he wanted to keep caring.

  • descant descending by [info]macha3 (Buffy/Spike): function. this is a dance of levels, and of levelers, and those who stand and wait. these are the gates she means on his behalf to shatter. this is the day the doors on the stairway down can all be entered. in this ritual she gives over everything she has and is reborn. when she has paid her price and finally stands naked, she will be clothed in power. this is a story older than the world. this is the game that she was born to play.

  • Opus by [info]zortified (Giles/Oz): He can't quite figure out the melody though, and he's getting closer to asking Giles if he'd help. Oz wants this written, wants it finished and to sing it just once before--

But maybe if he never finishes it, it will be his portrait against mortality.

  • the great cereal mastemind by [info]amand_r (Andrew): In the best of times, you're a feeb. No really. You are. Everyone knows it. They even say it to your face.

  • Threnody of Wildflowers by Yavi Asad (Buffy): "Tell me something I don't know. About you."

"I like wildflowers. All kinds, but golden poppies the best. You know, the kind that grows all over California."

    "Why?"

    "Because they're yellow."

    "You like yellow?"

    "Not particularly."

    "That's a dumb answer then."

"'Sa dumb question, Buffy, you either like something or you don't. There are no reasons."

  • listen to your heart bleed (and I feel fine) by [info]annakovsky (Giles, Spike, Buffy): "I... you remind me of someone I used to know," Giles says.

Buffy tilts her white head and looks at him. "You're, like, a psycho stalker or whatever, but I don't get it. I feel, I dunno, safe with you. Secure, or something."

"Really," Giles says. Maybe there is some of her left after all.

    #9 [one step beyond]

  • Definitions of the Gross and the Sacred, From the Mind of a Mad Woman-Child by [info]inlovewithnight (River, Firefly): Each of them has a noun, a designation that she can picture as written on their hearts, a role to play. They are defined, classified, categorized. Captain, preacher, pilot, mechanic; mercenary and soldier and whore. Even Simon carries his role in a word- doctor.

    River is undefined.

  • Touch.Feel.Lose by [info]sathinks (Angel): Angel knows he is insane.

  • Once in a Lullaby by [info]doyle_sb4 (Buffy): Buffy's imaginary world has a plothole.

  • The Bright Obvious by [info]voleuse (Angel): His own blood, borrowed, slows and slows more, until it sloshes like the tides in his veins.

    And he dreams.

  • (ab)normal iteration (the water metaphor remix) by [info]jennyo (River, Firefly): I rise and fall on sanity's moody seas. And he is always watching me, so I watch back, looking at how Serenity's lights change the angles of his face and smile.

  • Mercy Street by [info]gwyn_r (Dana, Spike): There was nothing Spike could say to that except the obvious -- that she'd cut off his fucking hands and had been well on her way to cutting off his head. But that didn't seem to matter.

Angel said, quietly, "Once upon a time, Spike."

  • All in a Row by [info]voleuse (Drusilla): rusilla trails her hand over the girl's shoulder, down her arm. Whispers in her ear. "Death."

She shivers. "When do I die?"

Drusilla changes, feels Spike shift beside her. "Now."

  • Never Lies by [info]theantijoss (Dawn/Dana): Broken. Disordered. They have a hundred names for how she's damaged, but with everything else inside her, she just doesn't have room for anything more.

  • Losing My Religion by [info]kita0610 (Angel, Wes): Angel dreams that his teeth are gone. All of them, his human teeth, ripped out of his head while he slept in the blue-black, in the tomb that doesn't quite fit.

  • Will My Eyes Be Closed Or Open by luna (Buffy): I won't cry. I'll just take a deep breath and shut my eyes, and then I'll open them.

When I open them, I'll be myself again.

  • His Body A Boat by [info]romanyg (Spike/Angel): Lord, Angel when did you get so old?

  • Big Exit by [info]amerella (Spike/Angel): Washing wounds and Spike follows him right into the bathroom and says sorrysorrysorry and Angel had forgotten how very warm his eyes could be.

  • The Long December by [info]wickedprincess3(Spike/Angel): Angel doesn't understand what he wants, though.

  • Follow Me Down by [info]empty_mirrors(Spike/Angel): Back in the day he'd have ripped the little blighter's head off, but that was then and this is now and that's all water under the bridge. These days Spike doesn't do that.

  • Vicarious by [info]lynnenne(Spike/Angel): Spike leered up at him. “Yeah. Just like that.”

  • Horizontal Movement by [info]shrift(Spike/Angel): "Drusilla Jubilee. Must've been grand." Spike laughed. "I could almost kiss you for that."

    Angel grimaced. "Please don't."

  • Familiar by [info]romanyg(Spike/Angel): He mouthed his neck, his ear. “Fuck you, you know I can’t.”

  • Wandering in Aquamarine by [info]itsabigrock(Spike/Angel): Spike was never meant to be soft, he was meant to be hard and violent; that was his purpose.

  • Hell Can Wait by [info]estepheia(Spike/Angel): It left them both hollow and strangely dissatisfied.

  • Back in Your Bed by [info]jennyo(Spike/Angel): Ah, well. Not like you came for the company anyhow.

  • The Waking by [info]mpoetess (Giles/withheld): Of course she loved him. How could she not, when Rupert Giles loved her?

  • A Girl Made From Sky by [info]doyle_sb4 (Dawn/Cheeseman): Sometimes, though it was strictly forbidden, he chased the worst of the nightmares away, and when he could spare the time he gave her more pleasant dreams.

  • An Atlas Of The Beautiful World by [info]croupier (Cordelia/Tara): They huddled together to keep warm that night, and when Tara whispered, "Thank you for doing this with me," Cordelia could only close her eyes and smile, because Tara was happy.

    #24 [zombies! robots! ghosts!]

  • The Amazing and True Adventures of Dawn Summers and Her Zombie Twin by [info]kyrafic (Dawn Summers and Her Zombie Twin): "Dawnie!" said Willow. "What are you doing??"

"Brains!" said Dawn, and gave Vi's hair another sharp tug.

  • Real Friends Help You Move Bodies by C.L Kamnikar (Giles/Jenny): "Do all robots double as barbell weights?"

"It's not a robot, it's an android," Willow corrected him, kneeling down next to the thing to study it.

"And the big difference is...?" Cordelia asked, stepping over it with distaste and joining Xander a few feet away. "And we should care... why?"

  • The Other Half Lives by [info]yahtzee63 (Cordy/Wes/Dennis, um, ish): The walls started pounding, and she quickly cupped one hand over the phone. "Phantom Dennis!" she hissed. "We are getting to ER soon, I promise. Just be patient!"

"Good for you," Wesley said. "But, actually, I was calling about something else. I was wondering if -- maybe -- you wanted to go out tomorrow evening. Dinner, drinks. You know."

  • Untitled by [info]kyrafic (Buffybot/Mr. Gordo): She waits until everyone is out [subdirectory /priorities/stealth] and boosts herself through the window into her bedroom -- the other's.

  • Lilah and Xander vs. The Zombie Gods of Redding by [info]jennyo (Lilah/Xander): "Oh, well. At least I'm already technically dead."

"And I'm sure that'll stop the crazy voodoo people from chopping you into tiny, itty-bitty technically dead pieces, Lilah,"

  • Medley of Extemporanea by [info]idyll (Angel/Lindsey): It surprises Lindsey for a second before he remembers the history the two of them have. Time's a tricky thing. It's not always as linear as one expects it should be and the past fifteen years have been packed tight and full of life for Lindsey.

  • The Loving Dead by [info]witling (Xander): So his house is cold sometimes. So what.

  • Big Damn Zombies, Sir by [info]shrift (Firefly): "Braaaiiins," Jayne said, and fell down the ladder leading to his quarters.

  • Untitled by [info]doyle_sb4 (Buffybot/Illyria): “You will move six millimetres down and three to the left,” she ordered. “And increase the frequency of your lapping.”

  • Xander Harris's Really Weird Jar-Jar Sex Dream by [info]spike21 (Xander/Jar-Jar): Well, see Xander goes to see the Phantom Menace and eats way too many strawberry nibs and raspberry sour fish and Flipz and Jones Sour Apple Sodas and so when he goes to sleep that night he has this dream. And it's a funny kind of dream, almost kind of a sexy dream, except that IN the dream he's actually still sleeping, or more, really -- *dozing* -- with his eyes closed and just feeling really...hmmm...really good.

#15.5 [to the losers; and to the winners: (HIGNFY-RPS)]

  • Ratings by [info]calapine (Paul/Ian) : It wasn’t that Ian was against gloating. He’d done it often now. But did it have to be so overbearing, so smug? So terribly obvious?

  • Something of the Night by [info]thedivinegoat (BtVS/HIGNFY-RPS) : Time slowed and he realised several things.
    1. Michael Howard had just physically manhandled him, and with no more effort than if he was a child.

    2. There was no heat coming from the body he was being held intimately close to.

  • Guest Host by [info]paranoidkitten (Black Books/HIGNFY-RPS) : They made him wear a suit. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, they sat him in front of an autocue for an hour and made him read. Read ridiculous rubbish about politicians having sex with donkeys and the like. And why did they keep talking about some vampire called Michael?

  • Scum of the Earth by [info]nerdcakes (Ian/William) : Never trust a politician, first lesson of living in the real world.

  • Roundabout by anonymous (Paul/Ian) : The sun rises and the world turns and children come out to play.
